Apple is reportedly close to a deal with OpenAI - could ChatGPT be the new Siri?

Apple has been linked to every artificial intelligence lab over the past few months, from Google Gemini to Baidu in China. However, the latest reports suggest that an agreement with ChatGPT maker OpenAI is nearing finalization.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Garman, the agreement will see that Apple gets the right to use OpenAI technology in its own products and services, which means that Siri2.0 can actually rebrand chatgpt as Microsoft has done with Windows co-pilot.

What we're seeing seems to be a much larger snapshot of the picture by working with various AI labs, including their own growing research department, to ensure that they have the best AI capabilities possible across their products.

Apple has previously suggested that many of its new Siri and AI capabilities run "on-device," and CEO Tim Cook has touted Apple's unique position that hardware and software can be interconnected and delivered. For example, the new M4 chip that powers the iPad Pro is the best AI chip available today.

Gurman also continued to negotiate with google, and the OpenAI deal will allow Apple to use the ChatGPT feature on Apple's next iPhone operating system, Apple's iOS 18."His source is an anonymous insider.

This agreement makes it a standalone app, from giving ChatGPT more in-depth access to the iOS system than is usually possible with third-party apps.

The reality is that Apple will keep control of Siri and upgrade using some of its own in-house and on-device models. However, models like OpenAI's Whisper and DALL-E might be used to provide more advanced generation capabilities.

OpenAI is trying to hold its own event promising updates for chatgpt and GPT-4, but CEO Sam Altman said what they plan to reveal feels like "magic" and speculates that many will see the new voice assistant. It's more advanced than the ones released by Apple, Amazon and Google, and provides a truly natural conversation. This may indicate what we can see from Apple's partnership. I think Altman will be on stage at WWDC on May 6.
