Apple AI is coming - and it can focus on these 3 things

We know that Apple is making a big bet on AI this year. The company is telling us this, especially after the launch of the iPad Pro M4, and there is no doubt that there is a lot to talk about at WWDC6 on May 2024. But you may already know some details about Apple's AI strategy.

According to Mark Gurman, Apple's strategy follows 3 separate categories. This includes a large language model (Llm) with on-device and cloud, as well as some types of chatbots. Llm is set up by Apple to be done in—house, while chatbots are done by third parties - Gurman tipped OpenAI and probably Google

Gurman points out that Apple has not built its own chatbots that have been heard of before. I've heard in the past that this is because Apple's chatbots were not ready to be released to the public. Gurman's tweet suggests that Apple is approaching it in the same way as Search instead. People want a chatbot, and Apple can't provide itself, so it's holding another company accountable.

Searches on Apple devices will by default go to Google as soon as they're out of the box. It's possible to switch to another search engine like Bing or DuckDuckGo, but apparently the default position reveals that Google is willing to pay billions of dollars to stay as Apple's go-to search provider.

In the case of Apple chatbot, Gurman is confident that OpenAI will be involved — and we have heard reports that 2 may be close to finalizing the deal. Gurman points out that Google may also be involved, but he doesn't seem certain about it. We've previously heard rumors that Gemini may be part of iOS18, but more recently speculation has switched to OpenAI and ChatGPT instead.

According to a report in The New York Times, the upgraded version of siri we've been hearing will be the "core" of Apple's AI strategy. Apparently Apple executives are worried that AI services like ChatGPT are making Siri look "outdated" and that AI could threaten the iPhone's market share by making it look like a "dumb brick" compared to its rivals.

The idea is to make Siri better in the chat rather than just responding to individual queries. That way, you can more easily handle a variety of basic tasks, such as summarizing documents, creating appointments, and setting timers.

You will definitely hear more about Apple's AI plans at WWDC next month — including plans for both iOS 18 and macOS chatbots and Siri. Until then, check out WWDC2024 Hub for all the latest rumors and updates around the conference.
