Google Maps just got two major upgrades — here's what you need to know

Google has introduced 2 new features for Google Maps, which focuses on the navigation of electric vehicles and identifying specific roads. Both seem to be locked to the Android version of the app, at least for now.

The original report comes from SmartDroid (via 9to5Google), which indicates that Google Maps supports filters that show charging stations for electric vehicles rather than gas stations. To see the changes, users need to tap the relevant filter button below the main search bar at the top of the screen. However, users will need to set their car as electric in your car section of Google Maps settings.

The second new feature is the map app, which displays the total length of the road and can be highlighted in blue when you search for it. In previous versions, pins were placed in the middle of the searched road. This new feature provides a better idea of the layout of the road, but it is still possible to navigate and search for specific points on the road.

Google has made some changes over the past few months, including changing the overall appearance of the app. Google revealed the new UI earlier this year and showed off more maps, but it quickly reverted to the old design. However, the app has since reapplied the new design, indicating that reverting was more of a postponement than anything else.

Google has also recently included new features to make it even easier to explore other cities. When launching the app in a particular city, users will see three new recommended lists that show trending locations that are consistently appreciated by visitors and, finally, a gem list that reveals up-and-coming places worth visiting.

Google is constantly working to improve its service and the addition of better support for electric car drivers is great to see. I don't know if this feature will be the best iPhone, but I hope it will come true.
