Android15beta2 is live now — these are the best new features

The Google I/O2024 keynote lacked specific details about Android15 and instead focused on Google's AI ambitions. But today, Google revealed a lot of details about the upcoming software upgrade and announced that Android15beta2 is currently being rolled out.

The big focus in this version of beta is to increase user productivity, improve battery life, maximize app performance and accessibility, and ensure that users have the best possible privacy and security. The beta has also been coming to even more devices, as well as Google Pixel, meaning even more people can check out these features for themselves.

The first Android15 beta was only available on some Pixel devices. Nothing is older than Pixel6, and absolutely nothing was made by another phone manufacturer. Currently, Google has revealed that the beta version will be available on a variety of phones, including iqoo, Lenovo, Nothing, OnePlus, Sharp, Oppo, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, Xiaomi and Honor.

Google has not yet specified which devices will be eligible for the Android15 beta, and it is probably up to the manufacturers themselves. Nothing Phone2a has not already been confirmed to be eligible, and there may be other announcements in the coming days.

The biggest security change in Android15 from a user's point of view is probably private space. This is another space on Android devices that can keep certain sensitive apps separately and lock them under an additional authentication layer. Some Android phones already offer similar features, but now it's coming to the right Android.

It's essentially like a partition on your phone, and when a private space is locked, all the apps in it won't appear in the Roll Launcher, Recent View, or settings menu, and you won't be able to send notifications. The app is also disabled, so it won't consume any valuable power or resources when locked. Media content and files are also separated from the main space, so no one else can view or access them.

App developers can configure their app to highlight recently selected photos and videos if the user has only partial access to media files. The idea is to improve the user experience of apps that need to request access to new photos and videos on a regular basis.

In order to protect users and devices from malicious apps, Android15beta2 is a step further, although background launches are limited since Android10, when apps running in the background foreground other apps.

Malicious apps can bypass startup restrictions in what is now known as "task hijacking". In this situation, the malicious app will launch another app into the foreground and pretend to be that app and overlay it on top. So there's a new flag that blocks apps that don't match the top unique identifier.

Android15beta2 makes intentions more secure and secure with the aim of preventing malicious apps from exploiting vulnerabilities or exploiting intentions. So, in the future, you'll need clearly defined actions in your intent before you start an activity or service. On the other hand, the intent for a particular component must match the intent filter specification.

The first change in efficiency in Android15 will be made as a change in the way the foreground service works. The foreground service will continue to run the app in an active state, but this has the side effect of using more power. It's not that bad in the short term, but if you keep it running longer than you need, you'll end up extending battery life through 1 day. So Google added a new system called services.

Put a 6-hour limit on DataSync and mediaProcessing onTimeout. After these 6 hours, both services will be pushed into the background and will no longer run.

Android15beta2 adds support for larger page sizes, from the 4KB standard to up to 16KB. The idea here is that a device with a set page size of 16KB can reduce power consumption while the app is running (an average of 4.56%, which can increase the speed at which the camera app opens). Google says the average improvement is a hot start of 4.48% and a cold start of 6.6%.

This change means a reduction in app startup time when the system is under memory load (3.16% lower on average) and an improvement of about 1 1.5%/0.8 seconds of system startup time, so by adding these changes, Google is offering app developers the opportunity to take advantage of these improvements.

VideoLAN's AV1 software decoder, called dav1d, comes in Android15beta for devices that do not have hardware to support AV. It is designed to provide 3x more performance than traditional software-based decoders and is backported to devices running Android11 or later.

Since Android7.0, Vulkan is an android graphics API designed to support multiple CPU cores and improve game and app performance by reducing CPU driver overhead.

Android15 provides ANGLE as a layer of options for developers that can run on top of Vulkan. It is designed to standardize Android OpenGL and improve compatibility and perhaps performance.

ANGLE WILL START TESTING ON ALL DEVICES LATER THIS YEAR AND WILL BE THE DEFAULT DRIVER FOR MANY DEVICES RELEASED IN 2025.

Upgrading large-screen devices like the Pixel tablet will allow users to do multitasking in a better way. These additional features include the option to pin the taskbar, quickly switch between apps, and save your preferred split-screen combination to speed up access.

We have already seen Android15 make improvements for various global Alphabet of Android, and the second beta pushes it further. First, it's support for variable fonts in Chinese, Japanese and Korean, but the Japanese Hentaigana gets a new font file by default.

These changes also help to avoid clipped fonts for various cursive and linguistic characters, making them easier to see and read.

The Android15 app will be able to provide a remote view to the widget picker. That way, you can update the preview of the widget and show the user what it looks like without dropping it on the home screen.

Health Connect adds support for additional health and fitness data types, including skin temperature and training plans. Skin temperature, as you would expect, can pull information from a wearable or other tracking device. Training plan support includes calories burned, distance, duration, repetition and step completion goals. Performance goals will also be available, including as many repetitions as possible, cadence, heart rate, power, and perceived speed and speed of movement.

The back button (or gesture) is very useful, but sometimes it doesn't always take you to where you thought you were going to go. That's why Android15 adds a "predictive back" to users with gesture control enabled. It uses animations to show them where the back button is going to take them, so they won't swipe and find themselves back to the home screen or another app.

Other minor upgrades include a smooth transition to picture-in-picture mode, rich vibration of notification channels, and Unicode updates. There are also ways to choose how people who use gender language will be dealt with by the Android system, using masculine, feminine and neutral choices. At first this will be available only in French, but in the near future it will expand to other languages.

As with the previous preview version of Android15, it is not yet clear when the final version of the operating system will be released to the public. So far, Google's release calendar has not changed, and we note that the beta release will be released sometime in the 7th month (probably at the end of the month).

However, the Android15 beta will enter the "platform Stability" phase at some point in the 6th month. This effectively means that Google will stop adding big and great features to its software. Instead, we'll focus on minor changes to make sure Android15 works as smoothly as possible before the final release.

In the past, new versions of Android have been released in late summer, usually in late May 8. However, Google may delay the release until 10 months. This happened with Android8, which was released just before the Pixel14 launch event. Google has not officially announced when Android15 will arrive, but after the software has reached the platform's stability phase, the developers have announced the final te of the app

which, like Android14, suggests that Android15 will not appear until the second half of the year. However, it's unlikely to arrive after the pixel9 series, as that phone is expected to run Android15 soon out of the box.
