Please note, Snapdragon—Nvidia, MediaTek may team up to make Chips for AI laptops

Qualcomm wants 2024 to go down as the year of Snapdragon X Elite processors, as computer makers are looking for silicon to power AI PCs. But the new report suggests that Nvidia and MediaTek are not trying to make it happen without a fight.

As reported by Extreme Tech, processor manufacturers are teaming up with an eye to creating Arm-based chips for laptops. The original claims come from a Taiwanese site, adding that the resulting silicon will be larger and more expensive than mobile-optimized Arm chips.

In recent months, Nvidia has been making concerted efforts to shift focus away from games that involve moves into the ai field. THE COMPANY HAS CREATED UBISOFT AND AI BOTS, AI Npcs, AND EMPLOYS RTX GPUS AS AN OPTION FOR AI PCS. While Qualcomm and Intel have been pushing Npu with their respective Snapdragon and Ultra chips, Nvidia has ensured that they work just like GPUs.

Earlier this year, Nvidia announced a B100Blackwell GPU designed specifically for AI. This is an entire platform aimed at commercial companies like Microsoft and Google.

MediaTek is best known for building silicon for smartphones. Some of these chips have made their way to mid-range and budget phones in the United States, but chip makers have a lot of presence in the smartphone market in China and India. That said, MediaTek also makes laptop chips that appear on Chromebooks and are already partnering with Nvidia in automotive technology. We are also actively developing AI-related products, such as AI processors for mobile phone chips.

According to reports, Nvidia/MediaTek chips are expected to be completed in 2024 Q3, but may not work until 2025.  The new chip is expected to use Arm architecture and TSMC's 3nm process.

For now, Qualcomm has an advantage in the AI PC market as companies like Lenovo, Dell and Microsoft are already leaning toward Snapdragon X Elite chipsets for laptops coming out this year. And Qualcomm knows there's competition, so there's some lead time in the production of next-generation AI-based chips.

Still, the competition is good and it will be interesting to see how the team at Qualcomm and Nvidia/Mediatek will change the market in the coming years.
