With iOS 17.5, Find My iPhone can be kept active while the iPhone is being repaired.

A new feature called "Repair State" discovered in the iOS 17.5 beta means that users will no longer need to turn off "Find My Phone" when handing over their device for repair. This information was originally reported by 9to5 Mac, which found evidence of Repair State mode in iOS 17.5 beta 4, which was released to developers on Thursday.

Apple and its authorized repair centers require that the "Find My" feature be turned off on all devices as a security measure. The reason for this is to prove that the user owns the device. However, some have complained that this has become more complicated since iOS 17.3 introduced Stolen Device Protection and delays when changing important settings such as "Find My Phone."

The new repair status allows users to use their Apple ID and password to verify that they are about to send their device in for repair. Apple technicians can easily verify that the customer owns the phone and proceed with the repair. Note that this feature is only available on the iPhone and is not currently available on the iPad.

One issue has been reported in the beta version: attempting to remove an iPhone via "Find My App" may inadvertently put it into repair status mode. When attempting to remove the device from the app, the message "This iPhone is linked to your Apple ID and cannot be removed while online, but is ready for repair."

A message pops up saying.

Unfortunately, we are unable to remove this iPhone from repair status at this time. This is likely because Apple does not yet offer this option or Apple technicians need to verify that it has been repaired. Due to this glitch, users should avoid activating the Repair status until Apple confirms how to cancel the operation themselves.

iOS 17.5 is not a major update, but these additions are great for daily use of the new phone. It is good that Apple is using the time between the release of iOS 18, which has been called the biggest update in iPhone history, to improve the user experience.
