iOS 18, Significant Productivity Upgrade Implied

Rumors suggest that iOS 18 will include a variety of improvements and upgrades, including generative AI, super-powered Siri, and improved accessibility. According to the latest rumors, Apple will improve the links between the Calendar and Reminders apps in both iOS 18 and macOS 15, making them more organized.

The news comes from AppleInsider, which claims that Apple is actually testing a "new and improved" version of the Calendar app that will support integration with the Reminders app. The idea is that one could use "schedule and organize daily reminders" from the Calendar app and not have to touch the Reminders app.

Importantly, reminders created in the Calendar app in iOS 18 will also appear in the Reminders app. They will also have the option to select a title for the reminder and add notes and tags. This should make it easier to find them when needed.

It makes me wonder if the iPhone needs a dedicated reminders app or if this functionality could be built into the calendar app. Although some reminder app superfans might have a good reason to keep the reminder app and the calendar app separate.

AppleInsider also claims that the Calendar app will undergo some minor design changes: the Today view and the number representing the time of day will be a bit larger; the Reminders app will be a bit smaller; and the Reminders app will be a bit smaller. This is fairly minor, but hopefully it will make it a little easier to read.

Overall, this would be a fairly minor change in iOS 18. But even compared to the larger, flashier feature upgrades, the small changes in quality of life are very important. Furthermore, if Apple wants people to actually use the default apps, they need to improve them to compete with third-party options, and all the small upgrades combined would be a pretty big change.
