Released in 2013 and pitched as a reboot of the classic franchise, Tomb Raider tells the origin story of Lara Croft, a brave adventurer trapped on a mysterious island. Not yet an experienced explorer, Lara is tested by this ordeal and must learn crucial survival skills to win back her friends and escape an evil cult.

The game draws clear inspiration from the "Uncharted" series ("Uncharted" itself draws inspiration from the original "Tomb Raider") and features a number of blockbuster action sequences, third-person shooter combat, and relatively simple but fun The emphasis is on platforming. Exploration is also a key pillar, with Lara's semi-open levels allowing her to scavenge for resources that can be used to craft upgrades and equipment.

This 2013 take on Tomb Raider feels like playing a big-budget blockbuster movie. It's full of memorable moments and cinematic set pieces that will make your adrenaline levels soar. While the story is a bit mediocre (Lara's characterization has been criticized), the gameplay is well thought out and the pacing is nearly perfect.

The sequels that follow ("Rise of the Tomb Raider" and "Shadow of the Tomb Raider") build on the ideas established in the first film of this trilogy, but the original remains the best game. The core elements are perfectly balanced and the island setting fits the tone well. Plus, the visuals still hold up in 2024.

Prime Gaming offers Amazon customers a Game of the Year Edition, which includes several multiplayer packs for the game's largely unnecessary online mode. These extras are not required, but would be nice to have.

The Tomb Raider reboot is one of my favorite games of its generation and is still an absolute blast more than a decade later. I've recommended purchasing this game in the past, so don't miss your chance to get it without paying for it; if you have an Amazon Prime account, take advantage of this free offer now.
