Sony Makes Big Changes to "Hell Diver 2," But PC Players Aren't Happy

Late Thursday, the Steam page for Helldivers 2 was updated with news that infuriated the Helldivers community.

In a statement from Sony Interactive Entertainment, the company said that starting May 6, Helldiver 2 players on Steam will need to connect their Steam account to their PlayStation Network account.

"Players currently on Steam will be required to log in starting May 30 and will need to link their Steam and PlayStation Network accounts by June 4," Sony Interactive Entertainment on Steam stated.

Sony claims that linking Steam and PSN accounts was optional at the time of the game's launch due to "technical issues."

"Why? Why do EA, Ubisoft, Riot, and other publishers require a separate login for their games? It's all about data management and access. Sony, however, claims that this new requirement is for safety and security.

"This is primarily to protect players from griefing and abuse by allowing us to ban players who engage in that type of behavior. Also, a player who is banned has the right to appeal."

To be fair to Sony, the game was released with mandatory PSN and Steam links. However, it was removed after Helldivers 2 exploded and the servers collapsed.

To say Steam users are angry is an understatement. As of this writing, Helldivers 2 has received over 20,000 negative reviews compared to just over 1,000 positive reviews today alone. All of the negative reviews are focused on Sony's announcement.

In general, the game has earned an average of about 1,000 positive reviews and about 200 to 300 negative reviews in the past month. They usually focused on various bugs and server crashes. Today, the situation has changed.

The top 15 posts on the Helldivers 2 subreddit are complaints about decisions in one form or another, or yelling at everyone else who is unhappy. Most of these posts have over 300 comments. Like other Reddit subreddits, it is a mess.

Many users have noted in their reviews that Sony does not have a good history of safety and security when it comes to data. Just last year, Sony's studio Insomniac suffered a massive ransomware attack that exposed 1.3 million files, not to mention a server breach in October 2023 that put approximately 6,800 people at risk.

According to Reddit posts we have seen, many people do not understand that PSN accounts are free. They seem to be confusing it with PS Plus, which has a monthly fee. However, it is understandable that some people do not want to see an additional login screen.

Developer Arrowhead suggested on X (Twitter), along with CEO Johan Pilestedt, to contact PlayStation support with any questions.

This may be a slight way to direct gamers' anger toward Sony and away from Arrowhead employees, who have come under fire on social media, Discord, and Steam.
