5 new Netflix movies over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes

The start of a new month means the arrival of new Netflix releases on the world's most popular streaming service.

We've picked out five films that offer a wide variety, from an intimate coming-of-age comedy about the most awkward time in life, the late teen years, to Steven Soderbergh's crime thriller that depicts the world of illegal drugs from a variety of perspectives. There are also must-see musicals and heartwarming documentaries.

All of the films below were chosen as Netflix's best movies because they received a score of 90% or higher on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes If you're looking to enhance your Netflix watch list, these five films are a great choice.

Teenagers honestly suck, and "The Edge of Seventeen" is an accurate depiction of such an awkward adolescent period. If you have experienced the tumultuous teenage years, you may be able to relate to this coming-of-age comedy with little discomfort. Don't be surprised if this film brings back bad memories of your youth. It's the type of social embarrassment that makes your skin crawl.

But don't let the cringe factor scare you, because it's still a wonderfully entertaining comedy. Hailee Steinfeld plays Nadine, a socially awkward teen with a cracked home life, and her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson) is her best friend, but when Krista starts dating Nadine's frat brother Darian (Blake Jenner) things take a dramatic turn. At least her sarcastic high school teacher, Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson), provides some questionable guidance.

Adapted from a 1989 British television show, "Traffic" portrays the drug trade from every angle. Directed by Steven Soderbergh and featuring a stellar cast including Don Cheadle, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Douglas, Dennis Quaid, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and James Brolin, the crime drama is uniquely structured like a miniseries.

"Traffic" consists of three intertwined stories, each exploring the U.S. drug war from a different angle. We see things from the perspectives of both drug users and suppliers, as well as those fighting to keep illegal drugs off the streets. There is plenty of drama on both sides of the battle, from a judge with a tough stance on drug-related crime who discovers that his daughter is a drug addict to two determined cops trying to clean up the cartels.

A feel-good film with genuine underdog spirit, Peanut Butter Falcon follows Zach (Zach Gottsgen), a young man with Down syndrome, as he runs away from a nursing home to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Along the way, he meets Tyler (Shia LaBeouf), a fisherman on the run from the law, and the two form an unlikely bond. They also convince a young nurse, Eleanor (Dakota Johnson), to join them on their wayward adventure.

While the film's storyline is somewhat routine, what makes "Peanut Butter Falcon" compelling are the performances of the three leads. The experienced LaBeouf and Johnson are excellent, but newcomer Zach Gottasgen is the star of the show. If you're in the mood for a comedy-drama that's a little subdued but still emotionally engaging, "Peanut Butter Falcon" is a good choice.
