5 dark sci-fi films with 95% or better on Rotten Tomatoes on Prime Video

There is something electric about the science fiction genre. When you watch a classic film like "The Matrix" or a suspenseful film like "Gravity," everything around you ceases to exist. But sometimes it is necessary to venture into darker territory, and sinister science fiction films tend to do that very well indeed.

From adventures into the darkest of universes, to a mind-boggling dystopian world filled with mysterious secrets, there is so much to genuinely experience that there are never enough hours in the day to do so. What's even better (for me) is that some of the darker sci-fi films present a mix of thrilling horror tropes, and Prime Video is the perfect place for that.

If you find yourself scrolling through the best streaming services, not knowing what to watch, our guide can help you. We've selected movies based on Rotten Tomatoes scores, but of course, these ratings rely entirely on professional opinions. This review aggregation site is a trusted source that Tom's Guide likes to follow, so you can trust that our listings hold the most valuable content.

Now let's present the 95%+ Prime Video Best Movies on Rotten Tomatoes.

Following the events of the first "Alien" film, this sequel takes place some 60 years later. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) has been trapped in a capsule in an escape shuttle for a long time, but is thankfully discovered by a deep space salvage team. She receives a report from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation and learns that a terraforming colony has been suddenly silenced on the exoplanet LV-426. Deciding to join the investigation, Ripley confronts the fearsome aliens roaming the colony and once again finds herself in a dangerous mess. And if that wasn't dark enough, there's also a facehugger that sticks to your face.

Returning to the old Japanese anime, "Ghost in the Shell" focuses on cyborg federal agent Major. Motoko Kusanagi (Mimi Woods), who attempts to track down a "Puppet Master" (Abe Lasser), a hacking expert with access to the computerized minds of cyborg-human hybrids. Kusanagi is curious about the man's ability to alter the hybrid's appearance, but begins to question his own identity and the benefits of having more human-like features. However, Kusanagi's curiosity gets the better of him, and the investigation takes an unexpected turn.

The looming darkness of this science fiction film comes from the danger of relying on technology. Kusanagi's struggle with humanity also contributes to the film's dark and troubling narrative.

Another dark science fiction film with elements of horror is The Quiet Place. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the film follows a family living a quiet life to avoid alien-like creatures that use sound to hunt. Even whispers and footsteps make too much noise and attract their attention, making it impossible to escape. Lee (John Krasinski) and Evelyn (Emily Blunt) will do anything to protect their children, but Evelyn's pregnancy makes it even more difficult for the family to navigate their altered world. As the film's slogan says, "If they ask, they will be hunted."

If you like strange and disturbing films made before the 2000s, "Stalker" is for you. This dark science fantasy art film follows a character called Stalker (Alexander Kaidanovsky) who leads a writer (Anatoly Solonitsyn) and a professor (Nikolai Glinko) into a dangerous wasteland called "The Zone." Stepping into this mysterious, off-limits zone leads to another eerie place, "The Room," which is said to fulfill one's deepest, darkest desires. The film's secrecy and sinister nature make the story even darker.

"Birth/Rebirth" is a film that steps into several genres: horror, thriller, and science fiction. But what makes the film so dark is its ability to challenge the boundaries of science fiction in its exploration of contemporary identity. The plot follows Rose (Marin Ireland), a morgue technician, as she manages to bring a young girl named Lila, the daughter of an obstetric nurse named Celie, back to life. Upon learning that her daughter has been brought back to life, Celie works with Rose to harvest the biological material that will keep Lila breathing, but the lines between what is right and what is wrong begin to blur.
