Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Performance May Not Change from Last Year's Model - Here's Why [Updated

EDIT (4/14, 11am EST): SamMobile, the source of the rumor, has further investigated the information allegedly posted on Geekbench and found that the information is a fabrication and is actually for the Japanese Galaxy S23 Ultra, not the new model. The original information is as follows.

According to new benchmark results first discovered by SamMobile, Samsung may be driving the Galaxy Z Flip 6 with surprisingly outdated technology.

The Geekbench test entry, which is expected to be the Galaxy Z Flip 6's model number, shows that it is running Android 14 as expected, but on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. This is the same chip that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 runs on, not the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip found in the Galaxy S24 series, which was widely assumed to be found in Samsung's latest folderable devices.

However, this version has more memory; it is listed as having 12GB of RAM, rather than the 8GB of RAM that the Z Flip has used since its inception.

Confusingly, this same model number was previously seen in Geekbench with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, but with only 8GB RAM like the previous Z Flip. This probably suggests that Samsung is experimenting with a different performance package for the Z Flip 6, but given that the launch is likely a couple of months away, it seems very late to be messing with such a large part of the phone's construction.

This is not the first unexpected chip rumor we have heard for the Galaxy Z Flip this year. Earlier ones in some areas suggested that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 could feature Samsung's current in-house flagship chipset, the Exynos 2400 chip, rather than last year's Snapdragon chip.

If the Galaxy Z Flip 6, or at least one version of it, turns out to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, it probably won't be a phone-killing decision. the Galaxy Z Flip series will not have a Snapdragon chip, as Samsung's other flagship phones, so obvious performance won't be a priority, and Galaxy AI will clearly run on Gen 2 silicon, as confirmed in recent updates. [Indeed, Samsung would be wise to offer a cheaper model, as it is being pushed by cheaper folderable devices like the Motorola Razr 2023 and Nubia Flip 5G.

This is speculation for now, and the truth about the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6 (and maybe even an Ultra or FE Z Fold model) will only be known this summer, assuming Samsung sticks to its usual launch schedule. The best foldable phone category is more competitive than ever, and we'll be watching to see how Samsung tries to stay on top.
