Android 15 has an "Even Dimmer" mode to reduce bedtime hassles?

Android 15 may implement a new feature called "Even Dimmer" to make nighttime cell phone use more comfortable. This feature essentially allows the phone's display to dim below its normal minimum brightness in dark conditions.

It is commonly known that using a cell phone at night can disrupt sleep patterns and potentially damage the eyes. Smartphones employ adaptive brightness, which uses the phone's ambient light sensor to measure the current ambient brightness and automatically change the screen brightness. However, this is an imperfect solution because different screens have different capabilities.

That's where Android 15's Extra Dim feature comes in, allowing users to set their phones even darker than before; Android Authority reports that users can go into the accessibility tab of the phone settings and set the screen above the phone's minimum brightness to They can turn on "Extra Dim," which allows them to dim the screen beyond the phone's minimum brightness. This menu also allows the user to set the intensity and whether or not the Extra Dim brightness is maintained after the device is rebooted.

This feature would add a transformation matrix to the red, green, and blue pixel data that Android is set to render. The purpose of this conversion is to reduce the intensity of bright colors on the screen and darken the overall display. They also make sure there is a quick settings tile option, and there are accessibility shortcuts for the feature so you do not have to go into the menu to set it on.

Android 15 is seen as slightly lacking in exciting features compared to Apple's IOS 18, but from what we've heard, they are aiming to improve the overall user experience more than anything else. Extradim features are not yet available in Android 15 Beta 1, but the possibility of them being added would continue this trend.

Android 15 is currently in its first public beta release. We are currently awaiting details about the full release of Android 15 at Google's next big event, Google I/O, starting in May. Until then, stay tuned to our hub for more on this event and Android 15.
