Android 15 could force apps into dark mode - what we know

[This new feature, discovered in a recent Android teardown by Mishaal Rahman of Android Authority, appears to be an evolution of the current setting called "Override Force Dark" and affects more apps than the current toggle Impact.

According to the report, the "Make all apps dark" toggle has been present in the code since the Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 update, but is not shown by default, and as of the Android 15 Beta 1.2 release, is still not visible.

During testing, Android Authority discovered that the option to darken all apps affects more apps than the current "force dark override" option. This could mean that the previously existing opt-out option has been removed. The new option also has less impact on images, but the contrast of certain buttons is still an issue. However, for certain apps, such as Fitbit, it seems to work much better than the current method.

Android 14's current developer setting, "override force-dark," has existed since Android 10. It was introduced to allow developers to quickly implement dark themes without having to write their own code, but it can be inconsistent.

A second beta version of Android 15 will be released at Google I/O 2024 in May, and while Android 15 sounds pretty boring compared to Apple's iOS 18, it still seems to be trying to improve the overall user experience in small ways. According to other reports, the new Android version will allow users to dim the screen beyond the lowest brightness setting and will offer new security features, including special security for side-loaded apps.
