Google Pixel 8a gets 7 years of security updates - why?

Perhaps the worst kept secret in Google history, the Pixel 8a is set to be unveiled at Google I/O on May 14. Earlier today, we saw some renders that left little to the imagination about the look and feel of the phone.

Shortly thereafter, Android Headlines obtained a leaked Google ad that provided even more details about the upcoming smartphone. The affordable phone would feature seven years of security updates, and the ad also talked about an "AI-mazing" feature coming to the phone.

The leaked Google ad states, "With 7 years of security updates, your Pixel will be even safer over time." It also states that the seven-year update period begins when the phone is first released, not when it is actually purchased.

It is important to note that the leak mentions the term "security update" as well as "update," which is an expression for the more expensive Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. Since the Pixel 8a is expected to be less expensive, Google is asking the Pixel 8a to have a multi-year Android upgrades every few years to the Pixel 8a. The company also did not say how many years of Android updates it will receive; the Pixel 7a received updates from May 2023 to May 2026.

The leaked ad also advertises AI features like Audio Magic Eraser and Best Take, which are exclusive to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. The ad also mentions "Night Sight," which is believed to be an updated version of the feature; other AI features on the Pixle 8a include Call Assist, Email Summary, and Circle to Search.

The ad also confirms that the Pixel 8a will use the Google Tensor G3 chip and feature fast charging, but it appears to be the same 18W wired charging speed as before. In any case, all fingers point to the possibility of an announcement soon.
