Spotify has leveraged artificial intelligence to allow listeners to create the perfect playlist with just a simple text prompt.

This Premium user-only feature is currently in beta and initially only available in the UK and Australia, but will be expanded to other countries in the coming months.

The feature builds on the popular AI-powered Spotify DJ feature that creates personalized song selections and adds song information and spoken commentary using a synthetic voice.

New AI playlists work by entering text prompts such as "driving to see the eclipse," and Spotify's contextual AI model searches an extensive music library to find the perfect track.

Creating playlists can go from a fun task to a tedious chore, depending on the purpose, often missing songs that would have been a perfect fit if you had heard them before.

So Spotify turned to AI to solve this problem. You can request anything from a list of songs about love in space to song selections inspired by your favorite cat.

You can even include emojis, but according to Spotify, the best playlists include genres, moods, artists, and ages. Be "creative and specific. For example, you could create "sad music for painting dying flowers" or "songs for riding a horse into the sunset," Spotify explains."

Spotify's AI playlist creation feature will only be available on mobile in the UK and Australia at launch and requires a premium subscription.

Access it from "Your Library," tap the + button, and select "AI Playlists." You will be presented with a default prompt or you can create your own.

"Creating a new playlist with AI Playlists is as easy as typing a unique prompt into chat," the company explains. This includes asking for an indie folk playlist to give your brain a warm hug or something to get you through allergy season.

"Whether you're a playlist-making novice or expert, AI Playlist pairs our powerful personalization technology with AI to deliver the perfect mix of music just for you," Spotify wrote in a blog post.

The update comes as AI music companies and AI playlist companies, including Suno, are competing with Spotify for attention.
