Samsung has begun distributing the April Update for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 in the United States.

According to Samsung's official changelog, the update focuses primarily on fixing security issues, with firmware build numbers F946USQS2CXCL and F731USQS2CXCL, respectively. The update is only available for unlocked Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 models in the US.

The April 2024 update for Galaxy devices patches more than 40 security vulnerabilities found in the phone's software. About 30 are Android OS patches from Google, including one critical fix. The remaining fixes are directly from Samsung and are Galaxy-specific security fixes. It is not known when the fixes will be available for unlocked devices in the U.S., but they will probably be available this month.

The April update appears relatively minor compared to the March update and the recent One UI 6.1 update that brought the Galaxy AI features from the Galaxy S24 series to other devices. For example, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 finally include Circle to Search. We also installed the One UI 6.1 update on the Galaxy S23 Ultra and found it to be as good as on the S24 Ultra. There were also fewer security fixes overall compared to the March update, which had about 60 in total.

The updates were not limited to Samsung phones; the April update for the Google Pixel included several, including one that addressed an issue on the Pixel 8 that prevented access to automatic exposure adjustment after the user tapped the screen to focus on the image included improvements to the camera. This update also coincided with the April update for the Pixel Watch, which included a new feature that uses haptic feedback to tell the time.

Security fixes are not the most dynamic updates and often fall by the wayside. However, security fixes offer users the best opportunity to protect their devices from evolving data and threats to device safety.
