iOS18 Leaks Spur Rumors of VisionOS-Inspired Design Changes

Apple will reveal the first official details about iOS 18 at WWDC 2024 in June, but we may have caught a glimpse of what the OS upgrade may offer MacRumors has obtained images of what is believed to be a new version of the Camera app in iOS 18

These images show the new version of the camera app.

The image is purportedly from an anonymous source claiming to have obtained it from an iOS engineer. The image is said to be part of Apple Design Resources for iOS 18, which helps developers work on the visual design of their apps to match the rest of the iOS system.

MacRumors has no way to confirm the authenticity of the image, but notes that the artwork suggests Apple will copy elements from visionOS for iOS 18. However, this is not the first time we have heard that Apple might take inspiration from a mixed reality headset.

A February report from The Verifier claimed that Apple would adopt visionOS design cues for iOS and iPadOS 18. The new design was said to include a new translucent look to some iPhone software, including the Apple TV app's translucent navigation bar; Safari was also cited as one of the built-in apps that would be redesigned.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also stated that Apple may redesign iOS "as early as this year," agreeing that design elements such as visionOS could be included in future iPhones. However, Gurman has since said that iOS 18 could be the biggest update to date, with Apple executives reportedly calling the upgrade "ambitious and compelling" with "major new features and design."

The image doesn't show much of anything, and the circumstances of its release are not that credible. It is not that difficult to plant elaborate fakes for one's own amusement, and even established leakers are fooled from time to time. But Apple is preparing to change the look and feel of iOS later this year, and it makes sense that the change would bring uniformity to all devices.

Of course, we won't know for sure until Apple actually reveals these design changes to us. Perhaps it will be done during Apple's keynote at WWDC, or at the latest once the iOS 18 beta is released. Thankfully, it shouldn't take that long. Until then, check out the iOS 18 hub for the latest news and rumors.
