AI Eraser is OnePlus' version of Magic Eraser and will be available on new and existing phones.

When the OnePlus 12 was announced, it was announced that AI-powered features would eventually be included in this flagship smartphone. Shortly after, a post on Reddit revealed that these AI features would be included in the Chinese versions of the OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 11 with ColorOS. Now, more specific details have emerged about the first OnePlus AI features to be included in the new and old models.

It's called AI Eraser, and oddly enough, it resembles another AI-assisted feature familiar to Pixel users, Magic Eraser, which first appeared with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The first official OnePlus feature with artificial intelligence is similar to deleting unwanted objects in a photo; AI Eraser leverages a series of algorithms and generative AI to seamlessly remove objects by selecting them and generating replacements for the selected areas. Before and after photos of this feature can be seen below.

This is a good starting point for OnePlus, but it still falls far short of the amount of AI-assisted features found in the Pixel 8 and Galaxy S24. given that AI continues to be an immense selling point for smartphones and is often overshadowed by hardware improvements, OnePlus has a big task ahead of it to catch up with its rivals.

Nicole Zhangm, general manager of AI products at OnePlus, reaffirmed that OnePlus AI is a priority. Zhangm said, "All OnePlus AI features are built from real user needs, and we will continue to invest heavily in developing more revolutionary AI-based features to move us closer to our vision of a more convenient future for all." What is interesting about OnePlus' announcement, however, is which phones will feature this new functionality.

Naturally, it will be on new phones like the OnePlus 12, OnePlus 12R, and OnePlus Open. This OnePlus AI feature will be rolled out gradually to these devices this month, with a Q2 release in Europe. While it is a nice gesture to have an AI eraser on older OnePlus models, we are eager to see more creative AI features in the future!
