What happens when you hire one of L.A.'s best private detectives to find your missing granddaughter? That's what movie mogul Jonathan Siegel is about to find out. Colin Farrell plays sharp-suited gumshoe John Sugar in the new Apple TV Plus thriller "Sugar."

The eight-part comedy co-starring Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Amy Ryan, James Cromwell, and Anna Gunn will premiere its first two episodes on Friday, April 5, with new episodes airing every Friday.

Is it a noir thriller? A neo-noir? Does it matter? Ironically, for charismatic private detective John Sugar, played by Colin Farrell, it's a noir thriller, as he is hired to find the movie mogul's missing granddaughter, Olivia.

Movies are his hobby. He is a cineaste. A movie geek. He is not just a hired stiff. According to Farrell, "He's a gentle character. [He] clearly lives in a world of darkness and crime and is lonely."

All the usual noir detective tropes are here: internal conflict, deep drinking, sharp one-liners, casual violence, but what makes him different is his love of film, a motif that is referenced in quick-cut flashbacks to "Double Indemnity" and "The Big Heat."

It shouldn't work, but it does. Sun-drenched California is the backdrop, and Farrell, who plays Bogart as a 21st century Sam Spade, walks, talks, and looks the part.

As secrets begin to be uncovered, the glamorous and sophisticated façade surrounding the movie business crumbles away and the ugly truth is revealed, from there emerges a new and authentic small screen hero, the skilled John Sugar.
