Google Pixel users can check for unknown numbers with this new tool.

Google is preparing to release a new tool for Pixel devices called "Lookup." It will allow users to identify unknown callers by searching for unknown numbers through various apps.

Discovered by informant AssembleDebug (via PiunikaWeb), Lookup allows users to search for unknown numbers online through their phone apps rather than manually. already rolled out, but was only available to Pixel users in Japan. However, according to AssembleDebug, the feature is now present in the beta version 127.0.620688474 of the Google Phone app.

The tool is relatively simple to use. Users first tap an unfamiliar phone number in the Recent Calls tab of the Phone app. After tapping the number, the "Search" feature appears on the right side of the drop-down menu, opening a list of apps on the phone that can perform web searches, including the Google Search app. Selecting one of the options will display results that may reveal details about the caller.

The lookup feature seems like a great addition for users. However, the information displayed in the web search is limited to company websites and user-controlled databases of unwanted callers. Therefore, it will not yet be able to completely replace applications such as Truecaller.

Being aware of potential scams is important, and Lookup may prove to be a useful tool for detecting them. However, criminals are getting smarter, with some reportedly using AI-generated voices to simulate a family member asking for help. Scammers have also been known to clone business numbers to trick people over the phone, so if you receive a call that looks suspicious, it is a good idea to call back to a verified legitimate number and never give sensitive information over the phone.

It is not known when the Lookup feature will be released to Pixel users outside of Japan. It is currently in beta and may be released soon, possibly with the Pixel Feature Drop update scheduled for June. In the meantime, you can check out all the new features that will be released in Android's next big update, Android 15, as well as details on Google's upcoming Pixels, including Pixel Fold 2, Pixel 8a, Pixel 9, and Pixel 9 Pro.
