Android 15's Adaptive Timeout could be a battery savior.

Android 15's Adaptive Timeout could be a battery savior.

A new report reveals Adaptive Timeout in Android 15.

Adaptive Timeout appears to be an addition to the Screen Attention feature introduced in the Google Pixel 4. Screen Attention uses the phone's front-facing camera to check if someone is looking at the screen. Once a user is registered, the screen does not turn off, even if the screen is set to time out. This was a great feature, but Android 15 appears to be improving this feature.

Mishaal Rahman, a contributor to Android Authority, noted several code strings in the Android Developer Preview 2 release build regarding adaptive timeouts. These strings indicated a setting to "automatically turn off the screen earlier when the device is not in use." This means that when the user puts the phone down, the screen will turn off rather than waiting the time set in the phone's settings.

One point that has not yet been explained is how the front-facing camera, which is supposed to be used, would recognize if someone is looking at it. The only concern is whether Face ID technology will be used to determine if the screen is turned off. If not, then the security is questionable. The last point is that this particular feature is locked to the Pixel version of Android 15. This is because the code line suggests that this feature will not be included in the open source version of Android.

This is not the only feature offered in Android 15, which promises to bring many quality of life improvements to Android users. So far, we have heard of several promising additions, including improvements to satellite communications and find my device software. We have also seen reports of improved support for Android's foldable range, such as the ability to open and close the phone and still use apps.

Currently, there is no set release date for Android 15, but we do know that the final release will take place at some unspecified time after July. Perhaps a more definite release date will be announced at Google I/O in May 2024. In the meantime, visit our events hub and Android 15 hub to check out the latest news and rumors.
