Sonos Roam 2 reportedly coming in June - 3 major upgrades

Along with rumors that Sonos is planning to launch its first headphones in June, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that multi-room audio specialist Sonos may simultaneously update its Roam portable speakers He says.

Gurman said in a recent Power On newsletter (March 24) that Sonos is preparing an update to its smallest speaker in June and is also working on a new app developed specifically for Sonos portables.

Sonos Roam has already raised the bar in the portable speaker market, consistently ranking among the best Bluetooth speakers since its launch in 2021. We like the smart features at home and the powerful Bluetooth connectivity on the go, and we're willing to bet that the new version of the Sonos Roam is likely to shake up the go-anywhere speaker market again.

The 2022 Sonos Roam SL Bluetooth speaker was a low-cost version with stripped-down features, but the Roam 2 is expected to support AirPlay 2 and the latest Bluetooth connectivity, plus all the usual Sonos smarts.

It is important to note that there has been no official announcement from Sonos regarding a release date or suggested retail price. The good news, however, is that the rumored Roam 2, when it arrives, is likely to feature several upgrades over the first generation.

Like the Sonos Move 2, the Roam 2 will feature a touch-sensitive control panel on top for music playback and volume control, although images of the Roam 2 have yet to be found online.

The interface is expected to be the same as that introduced on the Sonos Era 100 and Era 300 speakers, with touch controls for play/pause, skip back, and skip forward playback controls, along with small touch-sensitive grooves.

Despite the promise of versatile connectivity, some users have encountered problems with the first Sonos Roam not always switching automatically between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modes depending on their location. In Bluetooth mode, only one source at a time can be only one source could be connected to.

According to Gurman, Sonos is working on a hardware fix for these glitches, and a new Sonos app will be introduced simultaneously for both the rumored Roam 2 and Sonos Headphones. Sadly, however, the new app will not be compatible with the company's original Roam, Move, and Move 2 portable speakers until a later date.

While we can't attest to improved battery life, given Sonos' improved playback time on the Move 2, it is almost certain that the next generation Roam will have improved stamina.

The original Roam's playback time was 10 hours, and while one should not expect an increase to 24 hours in the next generation model without an increase in weight and size, it is comparable to speaker rivals such as the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 (14 hours) and Soundcore 3 (24 hours) We are willing to bet that a step up is in the works to rival speaker rivals such as the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3 (14 hours) and Soundcore 3 (24 hours). We'll update this article if we hear of any developments.
