The Apple Pencil could be the next big accessory for the Apple Vision Pro.

The Apple Vision Pro has many uses, but Apple may be adding a new way to interact with the virtual world: a stylus. That's right, according to a new rumor from MacRumors, a future version of the Apple Pencil stylus may be compatible with the Vision Pro headset.

MacRumors notes that the purpose of adding Apple Pencil support to the Vision Pro makes perfect sense, although details are scarce. Presumably, one would be able to use the stylus to draw and write within VisionOS.

Imagine using a desk or other flat surface as a sketchpad or notebook. Just draw with the Apple Pencil as usual, and the result is instantly digitized in your space. But compared to using something like a finger or a mouse, the Apple Pencil has additional hardware with pressure and tilt sensitivity that you should be able to take advantage of.

It is unclear if the stylus can be used to draw 3D objects in the air. This is something that many VR and AR headsets currently offer, and we would be surprised if the Vision Pro App Store did not have something similar. However, there may still be advantages to using specialized tools to create images instead of waving your hands around in the air.

So why settle for using the iPad as your canvas when the world could be your canvas? That's exactly what Apple is likely to say if or when they announce this feature.

Unfortunately, it is unclear if Vision Pro compatibility will extend to the Apple Pencil 3. This version of the stylus is rumored to appear with the iPad Pro 2024, which is expected to be announced by the end of April.

However, it is not as if Vision Pro support must rely on brand new Apple Pencil hardware. Apple may add this functionality as a software update at some point in the future, but when that will be is equally unknown; VisionOS 2 is expected to be announced at WWDC 2024 in June, with many additional changes and upgrades for the Vision Pro headset VisionOS 2 is expected to be announced at WWDC 2024 in June, along with many additional changes and upgrades for the Vision Pro headset. Perhaps stylus support will be one of them.

We can't say for sure, but it's fun to think about. In the meantime, check out our iPad Pro 2024 and WWDC 2024 hubs for all the latest news and rumors about the two.
