Netflix has released its dumbest true crime doc to date.

I have often wondered what happens when the makers of true crime documentaries run out of material to mine. But if Netflix's latest feature-length documentary is any indication, the well will not run dry.

Netflix says, "The Final: The documentary follows the events surrounding the Euro 2020 final at London's iconic Wembley Stadium. The championship game between England and Italy ended in a dramatic penalty shootout, but this documentary is not about the action on the field.

Instead, The Final focuses on the chaos outside the stadium, where some 6,000 ticketless fans attempted to storm Wembley to see the England national team hoist its first major trophy since 1966.

The event was well documented at the time and resulted in a pretty ugly spectacle, but the first clip Netflix has provided from the documentary certainly frames the situation in the most dramatic way possible. And it seems I'm not the only one who feels that the documentary seems a bit over-the-top. The Final has been mocked on social media for its melodramatic tone.

I should make it clear that I am not condoning the actions taken by a few very selfish individuals that day in July 2021. Like the vast majority of people who could not get tickets to the match, I instead watched the final in a sports bar. But do we need a real-life documentary about the actions of drunken fools? I would argue that we probably don't need one.

Documentaries like The Final: The Final: Attack on Wembley are a sign of our society's obsession with sensationalizing situations and entertaining criminal behavior. And I am part of the problem. If I complain about the unnecessary nature of this true crime documentary, I will no doubt watch it and urge the Netflix algorithm to provide further work.

The true crime genre continues to dominate streaming services, resulting in a race to the bottom that turns any vaguely dramatic or tragic situation into a shocking doc: The Final: The Wembley Attack is just the latest example of this particular phenomenon. The Final: Attack on Wembley is only the latest example of this particular phenomenon. But as long as we keep watching, it won't be the last.
