A significant downgrade of the iPhone SE 4 is reported.

The iPhone SE 4 is rumored to be moving from an LCD display to a larger and better OLED display. However, a report from ZDNet Korea (via IT Home) may have revealed a possible problem with this.

According to ZDNet Korea's industry sources, the screen for the next-generation iPhone SE will not be supplied by Samsung Display. Samsung Display withdrew its offer to manufacture the screens, citing "price issues." This is not a big loss for Apple, the source added, as Apple is trying to reduce its reliance on Samsung displays.

As a result, it appears that Apple has two suppliers to choose from. And since one of the remaining candidates, Tianma, has yet to convince Apple that it can produce a display of a sufficiently high standard, it appears that BOE will produce the iPhone SE's display.

The iPhone SE 4 screen is an interesting choice for Apple since it appears to be based on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 screens originally manufactured by Samsung Display. The process for manufacturing these displays would have to be developed from scratch and would not be able to rely on the help of other component manufacturers in the unlikely event that they were to be used in the production of these displays. In terms of specifications, Apple's use of BOE instead of Samsung is unlikely to result in a drop in quality, but other problems could start to creep in, or potential supply shortages if BOE is unable to produce enough quality displays to meet orders.

Rumors suggest that the iPhone SE 4 will replace the iPhone 8-based iPhone SE 2022 with a more modern design based on the iPhone 14. In this case, the iPhone SE series would move to a design without a home button with Face ID and a larger battery, but with one rear camera instead of two like the standard flagship iPhone.

The iPhone SE 4 will apparently be available next year, which is a bit far off for those who were hoping to change their phones soon. We have the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro to look forward to in the meantime, plus a guide to the best inexpensive phones you can already buy today if you need an upgrade on the double.
