iPhone 16 Pro hints at two big camera upgrades

While the iPhone 16 is still a long way off, rumors abound about the contents of the iPhone that may be released later this year. The latest rumors reveal how the camera experience could be improved, including camera components and the long-rumored capture button.

Digital Chat Station has received new information about a camera upgrade on the iPhone 16 Pro, which will feature a 1/2.6-inch sensor and an upgraded 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera lens. This is a significant improvement over the 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens on the iPhone 15 Pro, which has a 1/3.6-inch sensor.

This is said to come along with a 48MP main lens that has been upgraded from a 1/1.28" to a 1/1.4" sensor. This means that the iPhone 16 Pro's camera sensor will be almost an inch in size, capturing more light, containing more detail, and improving the range of colors in the final photo.

Given that the iPhone 15 Pro is already one of the best camera phones available, this should prove to be an extraordinary upgrade. Especially if the 16 Pro can enjoy some of the features previously only available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, such as the 5x tetra prism zoom.

Of course, there is also the capture button that is rumored to be coming to all four iPhone 16 models, and according to The Information, this new button is more than just a button. It may also offer gesture controls for fine-tuning camera settings before taking a video.

These gestures are said to include the ability to swipe left or right to zoom in or out, press lightly to focus, and press all to start shooting video. Apparently, this button will be located on the right side of the iPhone 16, where the antenna is currently located. Apparently, this location is the "ideal" place to access it with a finger when the iPhone is held horizontally.

Apparently Apple will use this button as a major selling point, but one wonders if this will cause more people to return to shooting in the horizontal position rather than the vertical.

The big shocker here is that The Information claims that the Capture button is mechanical and not solid-state like the Action button. The site claims that the button responds to touch and pressure, but such a design would be a big surprise. Especially since it was previously rumored that Apple might do away with mechanical buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro altogether.

It is claimed that Apple has yet to finalize the iPhone 16 design, but all of this could change between now and September. In the meantime, you can stay up-to-date on all the latest news and rumors in our iPhone 16 hub.
