Samsung Galaxy S24 Galaxy AI on S23, but S22 Owners May Be Out of Luck

Samsung's Galaxy S24 family is now available, and a major selling point is the addition of Galaxy AI. Not only will this feature be included in the new models, but Samsung has also confirmed support for Galaxy AI in older models including the Galaxy S23 series, Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Z Flip 5. However, it appears that support will be discontinued, at least for the time being.

In a recent exclusive interview with Tech Radar, Patrick Chomet, Samsung's head of customer experience, discussed why the Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22 Plus, and S22 Ultra are only a few years old, yet Galaxy AI He spoke about why the functionality is not seen in these products.

Chomet told Tech Radar after Galaxy Unpacked: "First of all, it was very hard work to get [these features] on the Galaxy S24 series. I was exhausted. And actually, TM Roh (Samsung's president of mobile division) wanted to announce (in Unpacked) that we can support Galaxy S23 devices with Galaxy AI, and that will be done (in the future) during the first half of this year."

"Over time, we want to make sure that our AI experience is supported by (mobile) performance, that is, CPU and GPU capabilities," Chomet continued. 'For now, we are learning, and we are taking it step by step.' We know that Galaxy AI works well on the Galaxy S24 series, and we know it works well (on the Galaxy S23 series). But we don't know what the intensity of AI use will be for the average customer and how that intensity will impact on-device resources and cloud resources."

"First, we want to ensure the quality and performance of what we deploy. Then we will learn how people use [these features] and adjust performance; second, we will deploy Galaxy AI on a second device, specifically the S23, S23 FE, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and Tab S9, to see how it works."

Samsung will likely release Galaxy AI functionality on the Galaxy S23 along with the One UI 6.1 update, and will likely use this to measure the strain on hardware and software as well as how customers use the service . This data will influence whether Samsung will consider releasing the Galaxy AI to older models.

Note that the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE uses the same Exynos 2200 chipset, but when we asked Chomet about this, he said, "For now, Galaxy AI is limited to previous generation devices." This indicates that, at least for now, S22 users will not have the opportunity to use Galaxy AI.

It is not so surprising that Samsung does not want to release Galaxy AI software too soon, especially for older models. However, one could argue that the reason for this has to do with the relatively small differences between the Galaxy series over the past few years. It could simply be that Samsung wants to limit the features to promote sales by separating the models. For now, all we can do is wait and see what Samsung does with the Galaxy AI.
