Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 price may be lower than expected - why?

Foldable cell phones are not cheap. This is especially true for the type that opens up like a book to reveal a large screen inside. But as part of its future smartphone plans, Samsung is changing things up with this year's Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Samsung sources its smartphone screens from Samsung Display. And its subsidiary may have decided on a new way to add bezels to its upcoming foldable phones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 6, reports Korean publication The Elec.

In previous models, Samsung was working with supplier Segyung Hitech on MDD (Micro Dry Process Decoration) to make bezels for foldable phones like the current Galaxy Z Fold 5. This technology used a film that is cut to make the bezel of the device.

Now, however, Samsung is switching to inkjet printing to make folding screen bezels, according to The Elec. With inkjet printing, Samsung Display still uses film and cuts it to create bezels, but the film is much longer and more bezels can be cut from a single source film. This means that with less material and less cost, Samsung can produce the Galaxy Z Fold 6 more cheaply.

The production of bezels is especially important in folding phones because bezels are used to hide internal components. However, because of how important the bezel is and because bezels cannot be so easily made on folding screens, the actual process of making the bezel is quite costly. In fact, according to TheElec's sources, Samsung has been pushing Samsung Display to focus specifically on reducing bezel costs for quite some time.

Then again, lower manufacturing costs do not automatically mean lower prices; TheElec's sources only stated that the company will reduce manufacturing costs, not whether the reductions will cause prices to fall.

Still, one would think that Samsung would be forced to produce folds as low as $1,799 now. Among the best folding phones, the Pixel Fold is also $1,799, and the OnePlus Open is $100 below these phones. If the price can be lowered, any of these phones would have an advantage over their rivals.

Samsung has not commented on its plans for the Galaxy Z Fold 6, but that hasn't stopped the rumor speculation. Last month, it was reported that Samsung plans to offer a larger internal and external screen on this year's model, but did not mention the size of the screen. Samsung is also reportedly planning design upgrades that could be used in future phones, including next year's Galaxy S25.

Expect more reports on Samsung's folding plans to surface in the coming months, so stay tuned for more news. And let's hope the Galaxy Z Fold 6 finally hits store shelves later this year.
