Apple March Announcements: MacBook Air M3, OLED iPad Pro, etc.

This year's spring Apple event bodes well, but new reports indicate that there will be three major device press release announcements this week - a new MacBook Air with M3, an iPad Pro with the same chip, and an iPad Air with M2 (new super Including a large model.

If you've been following the news, you know that not a single new tablet has come out of Cupertino during 2023. Given this, and the fact that iPad sales have been declining throughout the last year, it makes sense that the company plans to make a big splash sooner rather than later. This includes enhancing the iPad Pro with the M3 and OLED display, and possibly launching a larger version of the iPad Air.

Given that rumors suggest a mid- to late-March launch (not an announcement), this would be consistent with an announcement this week. However, only Apple knows at this point, so I could be wrong! But, wagers aside, let's take a look at what might be announced.

An M3 MacBook Air is inevitable at this point, but the big question is "when?" That being said, Gurman's reported late March launch will bring the entire MacBook lineup up to date with a 3nm chipset.

As for the design, we don't expect any changes. We love the M2 Air's flat, utilitarian frame. However, we are 50-50 on whether it will be both a 13" and 15" Air.

So far, the rumors have focused on the smaller model, but personally, I find it a bit odd that they wouldn't upgrade both models. It doesn't seem like a typical Apple decision.

Currently, the iPad Air continues to rock the M1, but it looks like Apple will refresh it at the March event. No major internal changes (aside from the bump to the M2) and no dramatic design differences... .except for one.

The Cupertino staff has been toying with offering large-screen devices for some time now, most notably the iPhone 15 Plus and 15-inch MacBook Air. With reports of a larger 12.9-inch version of this mid-range tablet on the horizon, this thinking may apply to the Air in the coming months.

This would be great for those who want to get the big screen tablet experience without having to shell out big bucks for an OLED iPad Pro.

If the rumors are true, the M3 iPad Pro will likely be the biggest announcement of Apple's entire March event. And this is not because it will have a new chip, but because it will have an upgraded display.

Rather than relying on mini-LED technology, leaked information points to it being the first large-screen device to make the leap from Apple to OLED. This means significant improvements in color reproduction, along with "crisper and brighter" images, according to Gurman. This will be seen across the OLED screens of the devices we are reviewing, which will be a big deal for creators.

On top of that, the display size of the larger option is set to rise by just 0.1 inch, and early reports suggested that MagSafe might finally be coming to the iPad thanks to the new glass body.

As for possible surprises, I wouldn't hold my breath. This looks like a full slate of products you can expect to see. If there are any other brief announcements, it would only be the possibility of more devices moving to USB-C, such as AirPods, AirPods Max, or peripherals like the Magic Mouse. We could use AirPods Max 2, but there may not be much new there other than a new port.

Other than that, this will likely be a relatively straightforward refresh of the MacBook Air, along with a big refresh of the iPad Pro and Air. This is going to be a big enough announcement to make you grit your teeth.
