JerryRigEverything tests the durability of the Samsung Galaxy 24 Ultra - here's how tough it is

Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra launched today (January 31), and many are wondering about the durability of this $1,300 flagship, and JerryRigEverything's Zach Nelson seems to have the answer.

Samsung details the durability of this next-generation Ultra phone, namely the new Corning Gorilla Armor Glass used in the display and the phone's titanium chassis. Overall, the Galaxy S24 Ultra performed quite well in JerryRigEverything's torture tests.

Nelson used a series of mineral picks rated by Mohs hardness to determine the strength of the Galaxy S24 Ultra's display. For reference, a typical score for modern smartphones is level 6, which means that the S24 Ultra takes a notable step forward in display toughness.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra has lines left by level 6 picking. However, after examining the marks under a microscope, Nelson concluded that they were caused by the pick material rubbing off and adhering to the display, rather than by actual damage to the glass.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra's screen has also been shown to withstand the heat of a lighter for several seconds before leaving marks on the screen. The fingerprint sensor under the screen was also able to read the user's fingerprint even under layers of scratches, thanks to Samsung's use of an ultrasonic sensor instead of the more common optical sensor.

Nelson found that the Galaxy S24 Ultra's titanium bezel scratched with Moh grade 6. He also noted that the buttons do not appear to be constructed of the same material and are most likely aluminum inserts.

It is unclear which grade of titanium Samsung used for the Galaxy S24 Ultra's body, as titanium grades reflect the durability of the metal. For reference, the iPhone 15 Pro uses grade 5 titanium, which was a big deal at the time of its release; JerryRigEverything tested the iPhone 15 Pro Max for durability and found that the back glass cracked when bent, but Consumer Report s rigorous drop test.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra was able to retain its shape when bent from both sides, leaving only a slight twist in the frame. Nor did the screen pop out or crack while being bent, despite being scratched in previous tests.

While the video focuses primarily on the screen and camera glass resistance, it also notes the effectiveness of the display's anti-glare feature. This is a less mentioned aspect of Gorilla Armor and is quite impressive. Comparing studio light reflections, the Galaxy S24 Ultra was considerably less reflective than the Galaxy Note 10+ that Nelson normally uses.

Overall, the Galaxy S24 Ultra appears to be as tough as Samsung promised. This is great news for customers who get their new device today after pre-ordering, or for customers who buy it now that it is available to the public. But just in case, it's still worth putting this phone in the best Galaxy S24 Ultra case. We also have a quick list of things you can do to protect your new phone as well.
