"Citizen Kane" has left such a legendary mark on the film industry that it has become a common expression to describe a quality film. "Brooklyn," a drama based on Colm Toibin's 2009 novel of the same name, asks a simple but deeply difficult-to-answer question: what do you choose when you are torn between your heart and your home? That is the conundrum Irish immigrant Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan) faces after moving across the ocean to New York, falling in love with a woman from Brooklyn, and being offered the chance to return to her native Ireland.

Eilis is not only torn between the United States and the Emerald Isle, but also between two very different men, the baseball-mad Tony (Emory Cohen) and the soft-spoken Jim (Domhnall Gleeson). Brooklyn is a romantic drama that will bring tears to your eyes, and Ronan gives a fine performance. Also not to be missed is Julie Walters in a supporting role as Mrs. Kehoe, the matron of Eilis' boarding house. Be sure to have your tissues ready, as it gets quite emotional.

Imaginative and quite brilliant, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" brings the popular Danish assembly toy to life. Set in a world made entirely of plastic Lego bricks, Emmett (voiced by Chris Pratt) is an ordinary man. But when he accidentally glues a legendary "piece of the Resistance" to his back, he must lead a rebel army to stop an evil plot by Lord Business (Will Ferrell) to glue the Lego world together.

Also featuring the voice talents of Elizabeth Banks, Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson, Will Arnett, and Nick Offerman, "The Lego Movie" is the perfect film for master builders young and old. Bonus points for being brilliantly self-aware and regularly poking fun at himself. Plus, the film's unique animation style is fantastic. The filmmakers succeeded in making the film look like a piece of Lego brought to life, which is arguably their greatest achievement.

A strong contender for Best Picture in 2009, Up in the Air is an easy sell based on its cast list alone. George Clooney, Anna Kendrick, and Vera Farmiga lead the cast, which also includes Jason Bateman, Danny McBride, Melanie Linsky, J.K. Simmons, and Zach Galifianakis. Of course, a lineup of well-known names does not guarantee the quality of the film, but fortunately, "Up in the Air" has much more to offer than star power alone. It is clever, witty, and very much contemporary.

In this comedic drama, Clooney plays Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizing specialist who lives out of a suitcase. He travels across the country visiting companies to ensure that layoffs are completed efficiently and thoughtfully. He loves his life in hotel rooms and airport lounges, but when a do-it-yourself young colleague (Kendrick) suggests a new system that would put Ryan on the ground permanently, he sets out to prove that the old-fashioned way is best. And he may find love with the same frequent flier (Farmiga) in the process.

Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece about the Vietnam War and the dangers of an unwavering military mindset, Full Metal Jacket. Kubrick's film masterfully blends these two sides of the story. In Kubrick's filmography, "Full Metal Jacket" stands out.

The second part of the film follows Joker and his comrades as they are sent to the front lines and adjust to the realities of the bloody conflict and the brutality of the Tet Offensive of 1968.

"Ghost Story" is a difficult film to recommend. While it has become a critical darling for its thoughtful direction, striking visuals, and rich themes, its minimalist approach to storytelling will alienate some viewers. While it is definitely more a work of art than a film, viewers with the right mindset may be captivated by this unique indie film.

In Ghost Story, starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, an unnamed man (Affleck) returns from the dead after a fatal accident. The ghost is confined to the house he shared with his wife (Mara) and can only observe the people around him. Time passes, and soon he begins a new journey through time and space to the afterlife.
