Give an unimaginably dysfunctional family a gun and a multi-million euro drug ring and let them operate in Dublin. A mix of ruthless enemies and a race against time, this is the basic synopsis of the first series of RTE's intense drama "Kin," acquired by the BBC.

"Kin" Season 2 depicts something similar, but the family is even more dysfunctional thanks to the release of the evil patriarch Brendan from prison, and the enemies, represented by members of a debt-chasing Turkish cartel, are even more ruthless (if it ain't broke, don't fix it).

The stellar cast, including Claire Dunn as aspiring boss Amanda Kinsella, Emmett J. Scanlon as her overwhelmed husband Jimmy, and Frances McGee as Brendan, continue to play out a complex and very contemporary script.

This is an underworld drama, and the grit and danger it implies, but it also gets at the psychological and personal issues that even the worst of us have: Amanda is grief-stricken, Frank (Aiden Gillen) suffers from both sexuality and drug problems, Eric "Viking" Kinsella (Sam Keeley), the idiot son, has a growing invincibility complex and is about to be tested to the limit.
