Samsung Galaxy S24 to Fix Display in Major Software Update

Samsung is ready to offer a fix for a display problem that has plagued some Galaxy S24 owners, making the new smartphone's colors look a bit washed out.

The issue first surfaced late last month when Samsung's newest flagship phone went on sale and appears to be primarily affecting the Galaxy S24 Ultra. According to some users, the "Vivid" setting on the phone's display does not show the saturated colors that they expect, and instead shows colors not much different from the "Natural" setting.

Samsung says the Galaxy S24 software update will roll out to phones starting next week, and the main addition will be a new "display vividness" option in the display settings. Using a slider, users will be able to adjust the color vibrancy to their liking.

The slider will be added to the Advanced section of the Display Settings. It is located under the controls for adjusting the R, G, and B colors of the white balance.

The software update does not mention another display issue that has received attention from Galaxy S24 owners, namely the unevenness effect that can cause fogging on screens set to low brightness levels. However, testing of the Galaxy S24's display suggests that this issue is hardware related and not something that can be addressed with a software update.

Display vibrancy is not the only feature offered in Samsung's next Galaxy S24 software update. The camera software will also get some tweaks aimed at providing better zoom, portrait mode, night mode and rear video capture capabilities. Again, Samsung's new model ranks among the best camera phones we have tested, but the Galaxy S24 Ultra fell short of the iPhone 15 Pro Max in our tests. It will be interesting to see if this software update makes enough of a difference to change our rankings.

Finally, the software update promises language improvements to the Galaxy AI translation feature. Samsung did not mention specifics, only stating that recognition and accuracy of all 13 supported languages will be improved.

This Galaxy S24 software update is expected to be available on February 22.
