Ever since I started owning a smartwatch, I've wished it could also be a smartphone No, I'm serious Whether it's a smartwatch with a huge display or a smartwatch with major computing power, I've wondered when a smartwatch would be able to convincingly replace a smartphone

But in Motorola's world, perhaps the compromise is not to replace the smartphone with a smartwatch, but to transform the smartphone into a smartwatch The company brought its adaptive display concept, first demonstrated at Lenovo Tech World last fall, to MWC 2024

Featuring a 69-inch FHD+ pOLED display, the as yet unnamed Android phone can bend backward from flat to several different configurations The most notable of these is the ability to switch to a wrist-worn smartwatch using a magnetic bracelet accessory

Remember the slap bracelets of the 90s when you could properly attach your phone to a band? The idea is a bit the same, with the display automatically adjusted to work like the Motorola Razr+'s outer window When secured to the wrist, the device displayed the time in a larger format and could even scroll to open several different apps

Also, when placed on a flat surface, the phone could bend into a small L-shape at the bottom, creating a built-in stand Again, the display adapted to 46 inches for the amount of screen exposure This mode is particularly suitable for video calls with hands-free photography

The phone can also be folded like a tent and placed top and bottom on a desk or table In this mode, the phone's display is essentially split in half, leaving both sides usable I can't think of many practical uses for this configuration, but I did enjoy playing a Connect 4 match with my opponent across the table This format would make battleships a lot of fun (laughs)

Motorola is definitely not the only smartphone manufacturer experimenting with the foldable concept In fact, I saw an imaginative flexible OLED display form factor by Samsung at CES 2024 last month But Motorola has probably done the best job in recent years of showing off concepts that don't feel so far removed from the finished product

The rollable Motorla Rizr is another great example of the company's display innovation Nevertheless, while the Motorola Rizr was able to be demonstrated alongside the new adaptive display, all eyes were on the newer adaptive display concept I don't know if this is a true taste of the devices soon to hit the market, but it certainly caught my attention
