Google Maps' Best Accessibility Features Upgraded at MWC 2024

There have been some big changes to Google Maps recently, most notably Google's addition of AI-powered features to its navigation app, the latest change coinciding with Google's big feature announcement at MWC 2024, which will bring enhanced screen reader support to Google Maps' Lens Things to do

Screen reader support was added to Google Maps Lens last year It uses the phone's camera to scan the surrounding environment, at which point Google provides audio feedback about what is there This is a very useful accessibility tool for people who are visually impaired or who do not understand the language in unfamiliar places

An enhanced version of the screen reader takes this idea even further When you point the camera at a particular location or business, Google Maps can read out a lot of relevant information, such as hours of operation, average review ratings, directions to get there, etc

Simply tap the camera icon in the Google Maps search bar, lift your phone to scan your surroundings, make sure the TalkBack screen reader is enabled,

and then tap the "Google Maps" button on your phone

In other navigation news, Android Auto's AI summary feature will be expanded to other Android phones after being announced last month with Samsung's Galaxy S24

The idea behind the feature is that it is supposed to prevent distractions by summarizing texts and group charts while driving That way, you won't be constantly hit with a notification every time your father is bad at controlling his impulses

This feature could also suggest relevant replies or actions to take when you are on the road, such as going straight to a shared location, sharing an ETA with a contact, or initiating a call

I am of the opinion that we should really cut off the potential for distraction rather than utilizing another way to divert attention from the road, but if you are one of those who must stay connected to as many people as possible, this may be beneficial

Both of these features are currently being deployed on Android phones and should be on your phone soon - if they are not already
