New on Netflix: 7 Movies and Shows to Watch This Week (August 19-25)

This week's top new Netflix TV shows and movies are not all Netflix Netflix originals are relatively modest this week Standup comedian Langston Kerman's new comedy special and the original film “Incoming” seem to be solid coming-of-age films There are also several original documentaries, the first of which is “Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE,” which follows a year in the lives of 20 contestants as they form the next great pop music group

The highlight of the week, however, is not Netflix, but AMC's production

Netflix has added a large number of AMC shows to its library, including all eight seasons of “Fear the Walking Dead”; Netflix has also added the first season of AMC's “Interview with the Vampire” series and one of my favorite shows of the year, “MIT Netflix is also offering the first season of AMC's “Interview with the Vampire” series and the first season of “Monsieur Spade,” one of my favorite shows of the year, along with other AMC shows

Here's a day-by-day recap of this week's new Netflix shows Check out Netflix's dark thriller, which scored 94% on Rotten Tomatoes

“The Walking Dead” was a huge hit for AMC, spawning a huge amount of zombie shows and movies after its first season launched in 2010; five years later, it even spawned a big spin-off called “Fear the Walking Dead” [Starring Kim Dickens as Madison Clark, Cliff Curtis as Travis Manawa, Frank Dillane as Nick Clark, and Alicia Debnam-Carey The film focuses on a family trying to survive the beginning of the zombie apocalypse Season 4 will feature “The Walking Dead” character Morgan Jones (Lennie James) as a crossover character, and he will be the star of the series for the remaining eight seasons

The show, which is sometimes stylized as “Anne Rice's ‘Interview with Vampires,’” has been a surprise hit for AMC Anne Rice's “The Vampire Chronicles” had already been made into a 1994 movie starring Brad Pitt as Louis, a French vampire turned vampire by Lestat (Tom Cruise) A television show portraying the same characters seemed to re-tread territory that had already been pioneered

However, the show received near-universal praise from critics throughout its first two seasons, arguably rendering the film adaptation moot Despite the same characters--this time Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac and Sam Reid as Lestat de Lioncourt--the show explored themes of race, abuse, and queerness in ways that the film largely avoided If you want to see one of the most watched horror shows, you should watch “Interview with the Vampire”

“Monsieur Spade” is not one of the seven best shows I watched this year, but it is close Its first season is currently ranked 12 out of 35 new seasons of TV I've watched this year, which is pretty good

In this AMC series, Clive Owen plays Monsieur Spade, aka Sam Spade, the private detective of “The Maltese Falcon” fame Owen plays the role some 20 years after Humphrey Bogart's iconic portrayal of Spade in the 1941 classic, and is effectively living in retirement in the French country town of Bozur But a man like Spade never really retires, and the private detective finds himself embroiled in a case of international intrigue once a convent of nuns is murdered in quiet Bozur If you like detective shows, skip TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY and watch MONS COUNTRY: Monsieur Spade instead

Zombie apocalypse and detective noir shows are great, but they are not for young children Thankfully, Netflix has that covered as well, offering one of last year's most popular animated films

“Migration” stars Kumail Nanjiani as Mac Mallard, the patriarch of a family of ducks living on a New England pond Life was good until Mac's wife Pam (Elizabeth Banks) suggested they move to Jamaica for the winter But they didn't even make it to Jamaica, Queens before disaster struck The film features a voice cast that includes Danny DeVito, Awkwafina, and Keegan-Michael Key

My first encounter with Langston Kerman's comedy came when I heard him as a guest on the “Lovett or Leave it” podcast But even if you have never seen his stand-up, chances are you have already seen him perform He has appeared on shows like “Insecure” and “The Boys” In “Langston Carman: Bad Poetry,” he tackles raising a top-notch baby, mentoring a mean teen, and managing his mother-in-law's dating app

For some reason, Netflix did not upload the trailer for this comedy special to YouTube So I posted a clip of Carman's stand-up that I particularly liked
