5 Best Shows to Watch After Season 2 of "The Tourist

Imagine waking up in a hospital room in Australia with no idea who you are or why you are there. That's the premise of Netflix's much-talked-about series "The Tourist."

Jamie Dorman plays the titular character, who has no recollection of who he is or why he ended up in the hospital. A cast of strange, kind, and quirky characters help him. Mystery, action, and a sprinkling of dark humor blend together beautifully to make this one of Netflix's top picks.

Season 1 was released in the U.S. earlier this year, and Season 2 was just released on February 29. Once you're done with your quick glance, here are a few more shows that have the same or similar vibe, like "The Tourist."

The show, one of the top-rated shows on IMDb, has aired for five seasons and has received numerous awards and nominations, including six Primetime Emmy Awards. The anthology series changes time period and location each season, although the characters overlap slightly. Each installment focuses on a crime that is connected in some way to the North Dakota city that the show is named after.

Movie fans will recognize it as a spin-off of a well-known film. Also, those familiar with the Coen brothers' films will find references to their catalog of work throughout the show. Given the mystery and dark humor woven into each season, this is a perfect follow-up to The Tourist. However, there is a lot of violence, so be prepared for that.

The show is definitely a sequel to "The Tourist," as it was written and produced by brothers Harry and Jack Williams. However, "The Missing" has less humorous touches than its Australian-set counterpart. Season 1 focuses on a missing boy and his father's motives for trying to find him. Season 2 shifts to a mystery about a teen who wanders off campus, is kidnapped, and returns with the story of another missing girl.

Like FARGO, each season is an anthology, with little overlap and can be viewed independently. The main connection is Cheicky Carillot as Julien Baptiste, the French agent investigating both cases.

If the mystery of "The Tourist" appealed to you, you'll love "Three Pines" as well. Based on the novel by Louise Penny, the show centers on Chief Inspector Armand Gamache, played by Alfred Molina, who solves a series of mysterious murders in the small Quebec village of Three Pines. The residents are not pleased with Gamache's appearance, but despite being coldly dismissed, Gamache is drawn into the lives of the villagers and discovers a string of potential suspects.

Regrettably, despite the positive reviews, the show was cancelled after its first season due to disagreements between the production companies. However, as a miniseries, it still stands up well. Those who were enamored with season one will be pleased to know that Change.org continues to seek signatures to renew the show.

If the Australian setting of "The Tourist" appealed to you, "Mr. Inbetween" is not to be missed. Scott Ryan's Ray Shoesmith is a charming but violent Sydney hitman; the 2005 mockumentary "The Magician" was about the same character. In this show, Ray's story is told more seriously, and the title refers to the ongoing struggle he faces while juggling his criminal activities and his obligations to friends and family. Not surprisingly, his work takes a toll on his relationships.

Created by Aussie friends, the series has plenty of crime, romance, and comedy. The series ran for three seasons, ending only because Ryan was done playing the character. Considering he played this role in an independent film and a major series, it's no wonder he ended up ...

Another Australian show to add to your streaming list is "Underbelly." As the title suggests, it is set in the underworld of the Australian world and focuses on both sides of the law. What draws me to this show is that each series is based on a true story.

The first three seasons were based on "Leadbelly:" the fourth on Larry Reiter's book "Razor," and the fifth on real-life killer Anthony "Rooster" Perrish. The sixth season is set between 1915 and 1927 and is about Melbourne gangster Squishy Taylor. And the final season tells the story of gangster Mark Reed, better known as Chopper. For crime fans who love shows based on true stories, this one is sure to draw you in and keep you there.
