On Monday, March 4, the 59th edition of the Tirreno Adriatico will start across the Apennines, which connect the seas on both sides of Italy. The 945-km event, which includes a time trial and two summit finishes, will test the mettle of all participants in the stage race as well as those who are preparing for the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and other major events later this year.

From west to east, this seven-day stage race linking Tirreno and Adriatico on the spine of Italy will be held at the same time as Paris-Nice, which has been criticized by some for thinning the peloton too much, but also offers a chance to avoid each other as the big stars get into shape.

Starting from Lido de Camaiore, this year's race opens with a traditional short time trial along the flat seafront. Departing from Camaiore, the race continues with a flat sprint stage, followed by two lumpy stages before entering the highlands of the Apennines. Stages 5 and 6 both have summit finishes, the latter of which, Monte Petrano, is a 10.1 km, 8.1% climb.

The overwhelming favorite to win is two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease-a-Bike). It will take a good effort to beat him, who won three stages with ease in O Gran Camino, but Adam Yates and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Ben Healy (EF Education - Easy Post) ), Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek), and Thomas Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers), who will test his skills in the stage race.

Many tried, but all failed. The peloton bravely threw their weapons at Jonas Vingegaard, but ultimately failed to prevent him from winning his second consecutive stage and the overall. Richard Kalapas (EF Education-Easy Post) was caught with 6 km to go when Vingegaard launched a deadly attack.

Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) tried to chase, but the pace was so high that they had to surrender, and at the finish the gap from first to second place was 26 seconds. Heading into Sunday's final stage, the lap around San Benedetto del Tronto, Vingegaard had built up a 1:24 lead over second-place Juan Ayuso and third-place Hindley.
