Move over "True Detective! 'Sugar' Looks Like the Detective Show of the Year in First Trailer

When Apple announced the 2024 lineup of Apple TV Plus, there was one show that immediately jumped out at me. In fact, my first reaction was, "I wish this new Apple TV mini-series had a trailer."

I was surprised to learn that the show would be available on the Apple TV Plus 2024, which is the first time the Apple TV Plus has been released. [Colin Farrell plays Los Angeles private eye John Sugar in this Apple TV series that follows the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of (fictional) Hollywood legend Jonathan Siegel. Initially only first-look images were available, but now the full trailer can be enjoyed.

After watching the trailer, I will definitely be tuning in for Episode 1 on April 5. This cop drama is shaping up to be a neo-noir crime thriller. The action starts right from the beginning. A mysterious man attacks John, and in the end only John escapes, covered in blood.

We also get a peek into the identity of John Sugar. This is a contemporary film set in the present day. However, John feels like a man trapped from time. He drives an old car, talks like a private detective from the early 20th century, and dresses like one. It is not unreasonable to expect a period piece. At one point, a woman (Amy Ryan) tells him, "You have a secret."

Sugar is primarily about the disappearance of a movie millionaire heiress and her family's long-buried secrets, and throughout this eight-episode limited series, John's secrets will be examined a lot.

What remains to be seen is where "Sugar" will ultimately rank in this year's ranking of detective dramas. I'm confident that it will ultimately place above TRUE DETECTIVE: NIGHT COUNTRY, which, despite early expectations, failed to set a landing spot.

However, it will be interesting to see if it can surpass "Monsieur Spade". AMC's detective thriller, starring Clive Owen as the iconic Sam Spade, was very much in the same vein as this detective thriller and, despite some flaws, is one of the best TV shows I've seen this year. In fact, the success of this show is a big reason why I am so excited about "Sugar." So I eagerly await to see if Colin Farrell can surpass the real thing as Sam Spade.

Here's who you can expect to see in this neo-noir crime thriller, including Colin Ferrell as the tall, dark, and handsome private eye John Sugar.
