The Google Pixel 8a has been rumored for some time as the next inexpensive Pixel phone. However, recent leaks suggest that it may not be as cheap as we would like.

The information comes from German publisher Winfuture, which states that the Google Pixel 8a will come with 128GB or 256GB of internal storage; according to a retailer who spoke to Winfuture, the 128GB model will cost around €569.90, while the 256GB version could cost as much as 630 euros.

This is not the first time Google has raised the price of an affordable smartphone. The base Pixel 7a cost €509, a significant price increase from the Pixel 6a's €459. This means that this time around, the price will be raised by another 60 euros from Pixel 7a to Pixel 8a.

To be fair, there are significant improvements between the Pixel 7a and the Pixel 6a, with the Pixel 7a offering a better screen, improved battery, and better camera than the 6a. 7a was more expensive, but still a great value in our review. It was still a great value purchase. But could the Pixel 8a justify a possible price increase?

For example, the Tensor G3 chip rumored to be included in the Pixel 8a could help enhance some AI features of the device. Hopefully, we may also see camera improvements like the Magic editor and macro close-up mode on the Google Pixel 8. Just don't expect the best benchmark performance from this chip.

Aside from cost, the report also mentions color options for the Pixel 8a. The four base colors are apparently Obsidian, Porcelain, Bay, and Mint. They are black, beige, light blue, and light green, respectively; Winfuture speculates that these colors may not be available in both storage options.

The crisis Google is currently facing is the narrowing price gap between the Google Pixel 8 and its cheaper version, the Pixel 8a. the Google Pixel 8 was priced at just €799 at launch. If this trend continues, either the Pixel a series or the standard flagship Pixel could become virtually redundant. In addition, customers may seek another budget option, such as the Galaxy A54 or OnePlus 12R.
