Metro Last Light, released in 2013, is a direct sequel to 2010's Metro 2033 and, like its predecessor, is based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel. The story follows Artyom, a young soldier living underground in the wreckage of Moscow's subway system after a nuclear war renders the surface uninhabitable.

"Metro Last Light" is a very cinematic shooter, with a clear emphasis on story and world-building. And in both of these areas, the game is an absolute triumph. The setting, a nuclear-ravaged Moscow, still feels unique a decade after its release, Artyom is an engaging protagonist, and the allies surrounding him are likable.

Unlike the fast-paced shooters of today, the "Metro" series requires players to approach gunfights with caution. Enemies are deadly, and if you want to survive, you must play smart by using stealth tactics and carefully choosing when to attack. This gives "Metro Last Light" a survival-horror feel, which is heightened by the variety of mutated monsters lurking in the shadows.

Some missions require visiting the surface of the earth, which has been exposed to high radiation. Resource management is another important aspect of "Metro Last Light," as these sections require the utilization of gas masks, but running out of air filters can be a problem. All of these aspects of gameplay combine to make for a tense and challenging shooter, especially if played on the harder difficulty levels.

Unlike the sequel "Metro Exodus," which tested wider, more open levels, "Metro Last Light" is almost a one-way street. While some players may lament the lack of freedom, the structured approach keeps the pacing tight as you move between large set pieces. In addition, "Last Light" is of reasonable length, taking approximately 12 hours to complete the first time.

[16] Given that it is free for the next seven days, there is no reason not to play "Metro Last Light". It is regularly cited as one of the best shooters of the past decade, and for good reason. What's more, if you enjoy "Last Light," you can play two more "Metros" (unfortunately, these are pay-to-play), and a fourth game in the franchise is currently in development.
