Nintendo Switch Pro can use Nvidia Ada Lovelace GPUs - Things to know

The Nintendo Switch Pro may feature a new Nvidia GPU running on the rumored "Ada Lovelace" architecture. In theory, this technology could make the new Switch quite powerful, but in practice it is just a pile of rumors.

The source is VideoCardz, a website that deals primarily with GPU and CPU news, which has published a report that the next Switch may use Nvidia's DLSS technology (which, briefly explained, optimizes game graphics without using much system resources). After posting a report about the possibility of it being used, a leaker called "kopite7kimi" replied on Twitter with a three-letter word: "ada."

At first glance, this appears to be the equivalent of a Twitter butt dial. However, digging a little deeper reveals that kopite7kimi is a known Nvidia leaker. Earlier, kopite7kimi revealed many of the exact specs of Nvidia's current Ampere GPU architecture. When they refer to "Ada," they are referring to "Ada Lovelace," which is believed to be the name of Ampere's eventual successor.

From a practical standpoint, it is difficult to determine what this means, since there are no relevant statistics yet on Ada Lovelace (if this is the correct name). But which GPU is it? It is unlikely that a handheld gaming console has the equivalent of an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090. On the other hand, console GPUs often use ingenious architectures due to space constraints; the Switch's GPU is probably not directly comparable to those found in the best gaming PCs. [kopite7kimi is not only the one who suggested that the upcoming Switch will use Ada Lovelace, but also the one who "revealed" the Ada Lovelace architecture in the first place. In that case, Nvidia may not call its upcoming GPU architecture "Ada Lovelace."

As is often the case, how much you believe the rumor depends on how much you believe the leaker. kopite7kimi has been right in the past, but in general rumors are more often wrong than right. Furthermore, even if kopite7kimi had accurately called Ada Lovelace's name and her inclusion in the upcoming Switch, those facts by themselves do not necessarily tell us much.

We just learned yesterday that the Switch Pro will likely offer 4K upscaling with Nvidia DLSS technology and could sell for around $400. Check out our Nintendo Switch Pro hub for more information and leaks as we get closer to the launch, which is said to be later this year.
