A new nest cam could be on the way — here's what we know

A new Nest Cam may be on the way soon, according to an FCC listing for a "wireless streaming device."

The "G3AL9" listing passed the FCC on Sunday night (March 28), but it is not clear when the camera will actually arrive. But assuming it's not too far off, that would mean there's a new piece of hardware for use in your shiny new Nest Hub 2.

According to a listing unearthed by 9to5Google, the device has a rechargeable 3.65Vdc battery, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity. It also lists an FCC ID on the "back of the device," which 9to5Google notes suggests that it has no screen.

All of this would coincide with the launch of the new Nest Cam. Google has already promised that a newer camera will be available this year, which ties in perfectly with the idea of a "wireless streaming device" without a screen.

Google promises "interesting new innovations," so other devices are likely to appear as well. However, our hunch is that this is indeed a camera of sorts. We can't think of any other streamable device without a screen that requires a battery.

Further evidence comes from the fact that Google has not made any changes to its Nest camera lineup in the past three years, and the Nest Cam IQ Outdoor has reportedly been out of stock since early this year.

The only question is when the new cameras will be available. The newly announced Nest Hub 2 passed the FCC in January and was just released a few weeks ago. However, the FCC's confidentiality agreement lasts until September 24, so we may not see it until late summer.

Either way, we will likely have to wait patiently. But at least we know that this is not the only new device Google is working on. We have already started hearing news about the Pixel 5a and Pixel 6, and there are rumors of new Pixel Buds. As soon as we have the latest information, we will bring it to you in Tom's Guide.
