Major PS5 updates have just improved HDR and 120hz gaming

Sony updated the PS5 this week.

Particularly eye-catching is the enhanced 120Hz support and a handful of settings that can be tweaked for ultimate convenience. Automatically switching to non-HDR output and powering on and off in sync with the TV are likely to be much less of a problem in a world of firsts.

The biggest benefit of this update is support for PC monitors with 120 Hz refresh rates. Support for variable refresh rates (VRR) has not yet been added, but will still be well received by those who have waited patiently.

Switching between HDR and SDR content has also become very convenient. Normally, players must access the console's settings to manually disable HDR when watching SDR content. This is a mild annoyance, but this update eliminates it; the PS5 adds a new option to the settings menu that automatically switches to HDR in supported locations and disables it in unsupported locations. Once the settings are adjusted to the automatic option, there is no need to check the menu options again.

For users who have migrated from the PS4, the PS5's power off is still a pain, but the new HDMI option in settings avoids this problem entirely. The One Touch Play option automatically turns on the PS5 and switches to the PS5's input when the connected TV is turned on; the same goes for turning off the PS5. When the TV is turned off, the PS5 enters rest mode.

A few other niggles have been targeted, including the noise level of the disc drive: shortly after the PS5's launch (via Reddit), a bug was discovered that caused the console's disc drive to operate at random times and generate loud noise when doing so. While this update does not completely eliminate it, Push Square reports that the new system software update has made it much quieter.

Other improvements include the ability to play PS5 games on the PS4 and save PS5 games to an external hard drive with this update.
