Trying to find AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT stock has proven incredibly difficult, but if you can get your hands on AMD's flagship graphics card, you can at least take comfort in knowing that it has set a new record for GPU speed

TechRadar reported that German overclocker Der8auer managed to get his PowerColor Radeon RX 6900 XT Red Devil to reach the fastest clockspeed in GPU history, breaking the record held by Nvidia The company reported that the Radeon RX 6900 XT Red Devil was the fastest GPU in history.

The Radeon RX 6000 series was AMD's answer to the excellent but under-stocked Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series, which initially launched with a clock speed limited to 3 GHz. However, AMD has since released higher binned (in other words, higher quality) GPUs that can reach 4 GHz. While it is unlikely that such frequencies will be reached anytime soon, Der8auer overclocked his RX 6900 XT to 3.2 GHz, surpassing by about 200 MHz the record set by overclocker Kingpin on his Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti

. [Der8auer relied on the cooling power of liquid nitrogen to get his card to 3.2GHz, as even his liquid cooling system could only sustain 2.85GHz. Still, both are considerably faster than the official OC boost speed of 2.25 GHz for the PowerColor card, suggesting that the GPU has good headroom if you want to try overclocking your own system.

Der8auer even claims that the RX 6900 XT could reach 3.5 GHz if the voltage is increased. However, do not try this at home. Small voltage tweaks are fine with the stock cooling system, but fiddling with the values too much can damage components.

Of course, many PC owners will be grateful to have current-generation graphics cards in the first place. The ongoing GPU inventory disaster is likely to continue for months, mainly because chipmakers are struggling to meet demand.
