PlayStation boss says PS5PSVR will be "huge" — here's why

After confirming earlier this year that the PS5 will include a new VR headset peripheral, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan further explained the company's commitment to virtual reality in general.

In an interview with Nikkei (flagged by Upload VR), Ryan confirmed that PlayStation has big VR plans. He said: "The next generation VR system is a very strategic opportunity for PlayStation. We launched PSVR in 2016 and have had time to understand the VR experience for years; what we've learned from VR is that the potential market is huge."

PlayStation's first foray into VR sold over 5 million units as of January 2020. So it is clear that there is a huge demand for virtual reality experiences among console gamers. Sony's next-generation VR headset is set to push VR further by offering console players an experience that was not possible with the original PSVR headset.

PSVR has often been lauded for not relying on gimmicks and instead offering users a variety of complete gaming experiences. That seems to be the goal again with PSVR 2.

"We want to continue to provide high gaming experiences to entertain the community," Ryan said.

We already know that there is at least one PS5 VR game currently in development, and there is speculation that the headset will feature a port of the acclaimed VR game "Half-Life: Alyx". We would also like to see Team ASOBI, the team that created "Astro Bot": we would also like to see Team ASOBI, the team that created "Astro Bot: Recuse Mission", one of the best games of the first PSVR, be given the opportunity to create another Astro Bot game.

As for the PSVR 2 headset itself, we don't know what it will actually look like, but it has been confirmed that it will be connected to the PS5 with a single cord, which is a huge relief since the original PSVR required a nightmare spaghetti of cables to function! . Sony showed us its next-generation VR controller, which appears to be a significant upgrade from the PlayStation Move wand used in the current PSVR headset.

It has already been confirmed that PSVR 2 will not be released this year (possibly because Sony cannot even manage PS5 inventory). However, headsets are clearly a key area of long-term commitment for PlayStation, so we will likely hear more about them throughout 2021.
