Sorry Call of Duty: Warzone fans, the Verdansk map as you know it is gone forever. That's because Amos Hodge, associate creative director of Warzone developer Raven, has declared that the current Verdansk map will be nuked forever.

"Players may not know this, but the current Verdansk will never again play in that state," Hodge said in a video detailing the new 1984 Verdansk map." The current Verdansk is gone and will never come back."

For those not familiar with the Call of Duty: Warzone changes, on April 21, the modern Verdansk map was effectively destroyed in the event that it was incinerated by a nuclear explosion, moving into season 3 of Call of Duty: Warzone.

Rather than move to an entirely new location, Raven and Infinity Ward pulled Warzone back to a 1980s-themed version of Verdansk and delivered a 25 GB patch, a new limited-time mission for Call of Duty: Cold War, operator, weapons, and four multiplayer maps.

The new "80s Vedansk" map shares the same name as its predecessor, but is quite different, with a new layout and seven new locations mixed in with the five existing ones. For those who have spent hours and hours playing the hugely popular battle royale multiplayer mode in Warzone, the new map may be the refresh they have been waiting for.

However, the definitive "no" to a return to the original Verdansk map raises the question of where Warzone could go next in other seasons. The Call of Duty game series ranges from World War I to near-future wars set in space.

"Battlefield 6" is said to be set in the near future, so "Warzone" might emulate that, or conversely, it might return to 20th century history and the roots of "Call of Duty," World War II.

As ever, time will tell. But the Verdansk map of the 80s will not bore Call of Duty players for the time being.
