Returnal shows what PS5 can do - how do you do it here

Procedurally generated sci-fi horror shooter Returnal will be released next week. Sony's marketing materials promise that the game will finally put the power of the PS5 to good use.

On its PlayStation website, Sony has compiled everything fans need to know about the upcoming title. The page includes words from developer Housemarque and some of the technical specifications. Gamers are promised "stable" 60 frames per second and dynamic 4K resolution. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

"By leveraging the PS5's ray tracing hardware, we can achieve high-quality lighting in real time. Our global illumination system uniquely adapts to the random placement of the world, and the neon-lit projectiles create that arcade, frenetic, dreamlike feeling that our team is known for," Housemarque's Technology Director Ethan Watson explains.

The studio's signature visuals are not the only ones receiving hardware assistance. Players can expect "full fluid simulation to control weather and environment, and innovative particle animation of enemies and environments."

Returnal takes full advantage of all aspects of the PS5 to create a true next-generation experience. Game director Harry Krueger praised the development team for "shooting for the stars" thanks to "unique PS5 features" such as Tempest 3D audio, dual-sense controllers, and ultra-fast SSDs.

This is also reflected in the gaming experience, with the SSD providing near-instantaneous loading, while the advanced 3D audio allows for greater immersion and spatial awareness of the in-game environment.

Some of the coolest features are provided by the DualSense controller. Its haptic feedback simulates "the feel of heavy mud underfoot or raindrops on your suit," contributing to the atmosphere and immersion of the game.

The adaptive trigger allows for "a unique multi-function trigger system that allows you to activate different firing modes by applying different pressure to the trigger," making the frantic shooter even more unique.

If you are able to get your hands on a PS5, "Returnal" should be at the top of your list as one of the titles that showcase the PS5's capabilities. It will be released on Friday, April 30, and will be available in standard and digital deluxe editions.
