With all the rumors about the release of the Nintendos 2, you may be wondering if it's worth buying an existing Nintendos now. At least I am.

The Nintendo Switch Lite is a console I've always wanted, but I'm on the fence about buying a full-fledged Switch. I recently moved into a new apartment, and I'm thinking I need a party console for my living room entertainment setup.

Of course, I could buy a karaoke machine. But there is something about playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the big screen with a few friends that appeals to me. I already have a 55-inch Samsung Q80T QLED TV, a light strip, and plenty of beanbag chairs instead of a couch. All that's missing are activities to gather around.

But I tend to have buyer's remorse, especially when I invest in a device that will be replaced by a next-generation version right after I swipe my credit card. Seriously: I bought a MacBook Pro 13-inch (2020) four months before the MacBook Pro with M1 was released. Of course, one can always say that subsequent versions of a gadget will be better. However, I am wondering if this logic actually applies to the Nintendos.

I'm no gaming expert, but I work with a couple guys at Tom's Guide who are following the leaks of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch Pro. They caught up on the rumors and offered two opinions on whether one should wait for the next Nintendo Switch or get the current Nintendo Switch now.

"If you have a 4K TV and already have a Switch Lite, now is the time to wait," advised Henry T. Casey, senior editor of Tom's Guide. 'The upcoming Switch is said to render games in 4K (when docked), and you don't want to lock yourself into a lesser experience.' By waiting now, you'll get the 4K games you deserve and a more future-proof Switch."

Casey knows I actually have a 4K TV. So why do I need a 4K Switch? The Switch's current default visuals may look dated compared to the Blu-ray content I watch on my QLED TV, but as more people upgrade from 1080p TVs and more manufacturers release games in 4K, it makes sense that Nintendo's next console will be able to keep up with the times It makes sense that Nintendo would respond to the times with its next console.

"Nintendo has something in the works for next year, but we don't know exactly what it is," says Marshall Honorof, senior editor of Tom's Guide. If it's something that's strictly better than the Switch, you're better off buying that."

Granted, I've never owned a flagship Nintendo Switch, so I may not know how much better the new version will be.

"The bigger reason I would advise against buying one is because you already have a Switch Lite," Honorof says. 'It's a small screen, but it gives you access to all the games in the Switch's library. Hopefully, the pandemic is coming to an end and we will be able to move to more places. A docked Switch is not very useful for people on the go".

Honorof's point is compelling. I also live fairly close to a park and imagine that as the weather warms up, I will want to play games on the park grass. Do I really need a standard Switch for that, when my Nintendo Switch Lite is already more portable?

That said, if I crave a larger display for gaming on the go, there may be a case for a standard Nintendo Switch right now. As explained in the Nintendo Switch Light vs. Nintendo Switch showdown, the Light's screen is 5.5 inches, while the standard Switch is 6.2 inches.

"If you're going to use [the Switch] in handheld mode, there's no reason to buy it when the new one comes out," says Tom Pritchard, editor of Tom's Guide channel.

Also, my Switch Lite does not have multiplayer capabilities, so my dreams of defeating my dear friends on Dragon Driftway while at home have been crushed. And while I may be able to hold out a little longer for the next Switch, the wait may be longer than expected.

"I think you should buy a Nintendo Switch now. Because the inventory of the new model will be absolutely disastrous," said T3 editor Ian Morris.

"When the Switch was released, it was pretty difficult to buy one, because it was so hard to find one.

Morris reminded me that I had happily skipped the hunt for PS5 inventory and Xbox Series X inventory. I don't know if I would commit to the ruthless and time-consuming experience required to secure the next generation of game consoles. Finding a place to buy a Nintendo Switch right now is much easier.

Still, I think my colleagues convinced me to wait. Maybe not until the entire new console is available, but at least until there is a great deal on the Nintendo Switch that brings the price of the two-year-old console down to $299. I also think you should spend some time with the Nintendo Switch Lite in a nearby park to see if the screen size is really starting to bother you.

Then again, if the current Switch was the same gorgeous yellow as my Lite model, it might not be as controversial.
